Your guide to slumps, survival and success

posted on April 25, 2018

Tucker Sims, C.J. Stewart’s godson, is learning how to play the game – and have fun – at an early age.

Slumps start and stop. In life, and on and off the baseball field, the desired outcome is success. But, you have to prepare for the slumps. They are inevitable. So, what bridges the gap between the two? It’s survival.

Slumps happen to the best of us. A slump is defined as a sudden severe or prolonged fall in the value or achievement. Let’s face it – you can’t control what you aren’t aware of. Awareness must come first, followed by making adjustments and action.

  1.  Awareness
  2. Adjustments
  3.  Action

Negative causes resulting in a slump include arrogance, a negative attitude and negative action.

  • Arrogance – Because you’re insecure and you’ve achieved some undeserved success
  • Attitude – Negative because you’re no longer achieving the unearned success
  • Action – Little to none, because you don’t feel you must do anything differently, other than achieve unearned success

Positive causes of declined failure backward: It’s simply a part of the game. And experience is a great teacher. Survival is the persistent existence of work ethic, despite failure that leads to success.

Here’s an important question you should ask yourself before diagnosing your current condition as a slump:

What was my specific hitting goals before the season started?

This is an important question because if you didn’t have a specific goal, you were planning for success to happen by luck and chance.

When you feel your slump coming on, remember three these things:

  1. Slumps happen.
  2. Show some grit and survive.
  3. Success feels better when it’s earned.

Remember: Intelligence tops being smart.
