Why you must train under duress – and why it works

posted on February 1, 2017

It’s close to spring and time to convert habits to skills. Are you ready?

There is something I tell my clients that rings true when it comes to training: “Train under duress to achieve success.”

It’s close to spring and time to convert habits to skills. A habit is something that you repeatedly do while a skill is something that you repeated do under stress.

August – October: Assessment
November – January: Building
February – April: Converting
May – July: Maintenance

Here are three skills that you must have in order to be ready for baseball games this spring.

Timing x 3,000 reps
Tempo x 3,000 reps
Tracking x 3,000 reps

You can get this done and it’s simple to do. Here’s how:

Feb. 1 – Feb. 28
Timing x 1,000 reps
Tempo x 1,000 reps
Tracking x 1,000 reps

March 1 – March 31
Timing x 1,000 reps
Tempo x 1,000 reps
Tracking x 1,000 reps

April 1 – April 30
Timing x 1,000 reps
Tempo x 1,000 reps
Tracking x 1,000 reps

  1. What reason(s) will you give yourself to not to get this done?
  2. How many reps are you going to do per day per week?
  3. How many reps are you going to do per week per month?
  4. Who will be the blame if you don’t have a great spring season if you don’t get this done?
