It is July and Travel teams are starting to hold tryouts for the new season. The “July Lie,” as I call it, for a lot of players and their families is that being selected by the best team means they have fulfilled their dreams. I have coached some the top amateur players in the country on some of the top teams, and I have seen and executed the “20-60-20 Rule.”
- The top 20% of players are studs who don’t pay to play.
- The middle 60% can play, but they must pay.
- The bottom 20% cannot play, but they must pay.
Travel baseball is a business. The truth is that there are bills to pay.
Here are some of the questions you should ask your coach when you are selected for your dream Travel team:
- Why did you select me?
- How many at-bats will I get this fall and summer?
- What do you believe is my full potential as a baseball player?
Remember: Intelligence tops being smart.
