“I sell outcomes and not batting lessons.” – C.J. Stewart
My passion for coaching comes from that quote. The passion I have for coaching was born from the lack of it I suffered growing up with respect to reaching my full potential as a baseball player.
I had some good men help mentor and model me as a young man. But inside my head and heart was the desire to become a Major Leaguer for the Chicago Cubs. I just wasn’t being prepared for it.
I failed to become a successful Major Leaguer because I lacked eight crucial things. Here’s what it takes to become great at any and everything:
- Conviction
- Passion
- Character
- Grit
- Habits
- Knowledge
- Skills
- Resources
As I was filling each of these seven buckets as a young man, it wasn’t being done with intentionality. The reason I’m deemed an expert professional baseball hitting coach is based on my training system and results. That training system consists of the following 10 criteria:
- Philosophy
- Methodology
- Phases of development
- Training without equipment
- Learning styles
- Character development
- Content
- Homework
- Accountability
- Plan for the end
By the grace of God, my results speak for themselves, including 20 years of experience as a professional baseball hitting coach. My list of students include several MLB World Series Champions, an MLB MVP, Gold Glove winners, NCAA Golden Spikes Award winner, NCAA Academic and Baseball All-Americans, Perfect Game and Under Armour High School All-Americans, first round draft picks, military officers, pilots, philanthropist, pastors, MLB executives and collegiate coaches, just to name a few.
How do I get it done?
With those eight and 10 things aforementioned factors as my guide.
We all have a calling in life from God for His people. Coaching is my earthly talent and discernment is my spiritual gift.
Let’s have a great 2017.
Remember: Intelligence trumps being smart.
