For my hitters, February through the end of April is about about converting habits to skills that will allow you to perform. You’ve heard quotes from coaches like, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard” and “No pain, no gain.”
I profess right here and right now that heart work is more important than hard work.
Consider how you’d feel if you filled your gas tank only to start driving and the fuel light comes on indicating that your tank is empty. You discover you filled it up, but there’s a leak and your gas has spilled into the street.
Everywhere you go, there you are with your heart. You can work hard all day long, but without a good heart, your success won’t last.
- Are you selfish?
- Are you a complainer?
- Are you a blamer?
It would be difficult to attend a travel ball, high school or college game this spring and not discover that more than 90 percent of the players want to compete at the Major League Baseball level. Each player can close his eyes and see himself hitting a home run in his first Big League at-bat. Yet, most are selfish, complainers and blamers, and won’t admit it.
Stress has a way of revealing the worse in us. The only way to fix the problem is to admit it up front.
- Are you selfish?
- Are you a complainer?
- Are you a blamer?
Doing tough stuff forces you to rely on five A’s:
1. Attitude – How you act
2. Awareness – Knowledge about situations
3. Adjustments – How you respond
4. Aptitude – Ability to learn and apply
5. Athleticism – High level of critical thinking
Remember: Intelligence tops being smart.
