Game on: Applying the work when the lights come on

posted on May 28, 2025

For hitters I train, May, June and July mark the Application Phase—it’s showtime. This is the time when the drills are done, the concepts are clear and the lights are on. The goal now is simple: apply what you’ve learned.

This time of year isn’t about experimenting or making major changes. That comes later, during Fall Baseball—August, September and October—when we enter the Assessment Phase. That’s when my hitters are encouraged to try new things, take risks, and figure out what works and what doesn’t. But right now, it’s about trusting your training and showing what you’ve got.

What separates me as a coach is the foundation I stand on:

  • A Philosophy – What I believe: That every player deserves a chance to become not only a Major League player but a Major League citizen.
  • A Methodology – How I teach: With intentional reps, informed by data, trauma awareness, and real player development strategies.
  • A Framework – When and where it applies: Seasonally, aligned with where the athlete is physically, mentally, and emotionally in their growth cycle.

At this stage of my career, while I’m still known for developing elite hitters, my greater focus is on coaching coaches. I’m building tools and content to help coaches move from good to great—because the quality of coaching determines the quality of the athlete.

One of the tools I’m most proud of is the Pedagogy for Pros Trauma-Informed Coaching Certification, which launched April 15, 2025—Jackie Robinson Day. This certification is rooted in purpose and power.

I define a C.O.A.C.H. as:

  • Cultivating growth
  • Opening opportunities
  • Advancing progress
  • Confidence building
  • Harmonizing a shared journey of learning

This work isn’t about guessing or getting lucky. It’s not about throwing paint at the wall and hoping something sticks. It’s about creating structured development processes that build confidence, competence and character.

Success for an athlete might mean playing in the big leagues. But success can also mean recognizing it’s time to pivot to another calling. Either way, the outcome should be a Major League citizen—one who understands discipline, responsibility and purpose.

That’s what this Application Phase is all about: applying lessons that transcend the field.

I’ve achieved success. But now, I’m chasing significance. And significance comes from helping others succeed—intentionally, intelligently and with impact.

  • Let’s coach with purpose.
  • Let’s play with clarity.
  • Let’s develop citizens, not just players.
