Over the past two weeks, we’ve laid the foundation for mastery—starting with how you think (MIND) and what you do (MUSCLE). Now, we shift to the most important question: Who are you?
Baseball doesn’t just reveal skill; it reveals character. Your habits, your discipline and your response to adversity all tell a story about who you are when the game—and life—gets tough.
The Power of Identity
Your identity is not just about your talent or your stats. It’s about what drives you when things aren’t easy. Many players can perform when things are going well—but who are you when you’re 0-for-4, when you make an error, when you feel overlooked?
Your response in those moments defines your meaning in the game and in life.
The Bible gives us another reminder in Proverbs 23:7:
“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
Your self-perception determines your reality. If you see yourself as just a player, then your performance will always control your confidence. But if you see yourself as a leader, a competitor, and a learner, you’ll keep growing—no matter the circumstances.
Three Key Truths About Meaning
1. Your Work Reflects Your Identity
If you see yourself as a disciplined athlete, your training will prove it. If you cut corners, your game will reveal it. What you do is a reflection of who you are.
2. Your Struggles Shape Your Strength
No one grows without failure. Your biggest losses are where you learn the most. When you struggle, do you look for excuses, or do you embrace the lesson?
3. Your Commitment Defines You
Showing up when it’s easy is nothing. Who are you when it’s hard? Do you keep working when no one is watching? Do you invest in the details that others ignore?
The Weekly Challenge (March 19-25)
Ask yourself these three questions every day this week:
- What do my daily actions say about who I am?
- When I face failure, do I let it define me, or do I grow from it?
- What drives me to keep working, even when I don’t feel like it?
Write it down. Be honest. Then take action.
Marching Forward
- Your mind sets the foundation.
- Your muscles execute the plan.
- Your meaning gives you the reason to keep going.
This is not just about baseball. It’s about life. Mastery doesn’t happen overnight, and it’s not about talent alone. It’s about the person you’re becoming through the process.
Let’s get to work.
Remember: Intelligence tops being smart.
