So, your goal is to hit for a high average this spring. That should be part of your off-season approach every year. If you really want to hit for a high average, you must spend 90 percent of your practice time in March to improve your timing.
The reality is that you’ve spent the majority of your baseball career working on your swing approach. If it isn’t short enough by now, it’ll never be short enough.
The irony is that you can be a great hitter with a long approach. The key is that you must loaded, and on time to track the pitches and complete the rest of your swing. You may not hit for a lot of power, but you’ll get more than your fair share of hits.
The three keys to being on time are: the what, the when and the how.
Key No. 1: The What
First, you must categorize pitchers as having an above average fastball, average fastball and below average fastball. The best time to determine this is when the pitcher is throwing off the mound between or during innings. The speed is based on your experience. If you feel that his speed is average, it’s average. Focus on being ready on time.
Key No. 2: The When
I can’t make timing any simpler than this. Once you have determined what type of pitcher you’re facing based on his fastball, get in a good loaded position, on time to track the pitch and complete your swing.
Key No. 3: The How
Now you must work on your timing by tracking a live pitching arm. You need 400 reps per week to realistically expect to get a hit 40 percent of the time. I have a pitcher ready to throw 24 hours/7 days per week in my Online Tool Box. Click here to get your reps and make getting hits easier.
Good hitters don’t work hard; they work smart.
