Why the ‘myelin sheath’ matters to your hitting strategy

L.E.A.D. Ambassador Byron Brinkley is working to develop his myelin sheath.

Stress brings out the best. Have you ever heard of myelin sheath?  A myelin sheath is a layer that protects neurons, which transmits nerve impulses. So, basically, we perform things because our neurons allow us to, and the myelin sheath protects the neurons so that we can do stuff well and often.

To become an elite athlete, you need a lot of myelin sheath. Neuron transmission can enable you to swing at a pitch. Your eyes see the ball and your brain tells your hands to move forward to swing.

The myelin sheath, on the other hand, allows you to track a 90 MPH slider in the World Series with the bases loaded, a full count, two outs, down by two. The result: You drive the ball into the gap to win the game.

How do you develop the myelin sheath? You do it by performing tough stuff repeatedly and mastering the ability to make adjustments with success following.

Hitting baseballs off the tee is a pretty basic thing for baseball players. Try this Skill Build Drill:

  • Use a Tanner Tee and get 10-100 baseballs
  • Setup a quarter size target 40-50 feet away from the tee
  • Take 100 swings and try to hit the target with a goal of hitting the target 20 times

That’s how you develop do it – that’s how you develop the myelin sheath.

Remember: Intelligence tops being smart.
