OK, it’s mid September and there are a number of pennant races and wild card chases that will go down to the last couple of days. And before you know it, the MLB playoffs will begin.
One matchup that would be most interesting from this vantage point would be the Braves vs. Pirates.
As both teams battle through one of the season’s toughest stretches, we do have the possibility of a Jason Heyward versus Andrew McCutchen Diamond Directors’ reunion.
Diamond Directors was established in 1998 to ensure that then teenagers like Jason and Andrew could have the opportunity to play in postseason games like this.
J-Hey versus Cutch is what the game is all about.
I remember watching Andrew hit for the first time as a 12 year old. He had a lightning fast bat. The ball really jumped off of it. On a scale from 1 to 10, his commitment to developing a sound swing was 10. My job was to make sure he understood the importance of developing a swing that was repeatable. With thousands of repetitions and a keen sense of awareness, he has become one of the best hitters in the game.
Jason has always been a student of hitting. He expected quality information from me. He didn’t want me to train him on how to swing the bat; he wanted to be educated so he could make adjustments. His 20-plus home runs are in direct correlation to his knowledge of his swing, and his ability to preserve and make adjustments.
I would love nothing more than to see Cutch and J-Hey go head-to-head in the playoffs. Either way, I’m proud to say that I have played a part in their swing development since those early years.
